Several months ago I was asked to design a facade for a water pump station in Miami, Florida. My ideas followed the components and movements of water. The process of design is more compelling than functional and leads me to reflect on the beauty and the essence of what the building inhabits. Water is the first—and the most important—element. The sun—the complexity and the sexiness of its look—comes to me mainly from the building’s location. The sequence of the structures is an alternative to the concept supporting this project. Water and sequence can be linked in many ways, mainly because sequence represents a timeline. In this case, a timeline for water. Water comes and goes – water comes and goes… In the process, it leaves behind shapes and gestures that articulate the land—like blood.

Sketching the idea…

Cardboard + plexiglass model—building confection.
